Guilt Free Fun: Active Island

As an active tour ourselves, we make it our goal to share other fun, outdoor activities in the Virgin Islands. Tree Limin' Extreme Zipline Park introduces Active Island:

When you think of vacations, what are your thoughts; mounds of delicious food, unlimited fruity cocktails, and long naps on the beach? You’re probably not thinking about exercise, and if you are, the hotel/resort gyms aren’t where you want to spend your vacation. Well Active Island noticed the lack of an active outlet while traveling and they decided to do something about it!

The newly married owners are New England natives and are passionate about exercise and travel. It only made sense that they would relocate to the popular tourist destination of St. Thomas and make their vision a reality. Their goal was to blend vacation and exercise for those who are passionate about health and wellness.

Interview with the Owners!

Jogging on the beach and around town during vacations is an appealing idea, but when you’re unfamiliar with an area, it may be a little daunting. You may also find yourself wondering what you’re seeing as you unknowingly pass historic monuments and landmarks. All of this was the idea behind their popular guided running tour and power walking tour.

Active Island is popular amongst both locals and tourists! The activities they offer add much needed health and wellness benefits that the USVI has been lacking.

There’s an array of actives and events that Active Island offers. The first and one of the most popular activities they offer is the guided running and walking tours. These 5k tours combine sightseeing and running at a casual pace or power walking, with informative guides who take pictures along the way. You'll take in the stunning views of the harbor while soaking in the rich history of the island's bustling Charlotte Amalie. Stand on the steps of Fort Christian, a Danish-built fort that is the oldest standing structure in the USVI, run up the historic 99 Steps, and pass by several other historic sites and pirate hangouts.

Another incredibly popular (and clever) activity they offer is Stretch & Sip Yoga. They offer both wine tasting yoga in the evening and mimosas in the morning, both classes are an hour long and welcome guests of all skill levels!

On top of these tours, Active Island sets up community events! VI Til I Dye and Run the Night were a blast! Check out some highlights here:

St. John Ferry

The USVI is truly a Caribbean paradise. Even things such as commuting between islands can be an experience. The ferry ride between St. Thomas and St. John from the Red Hook Ferry dock can be a sight to see!

Since St. John doesn’t have an airport, visitors, locals, and really anyone who travels to the island and back will have to take a ferry or boat. This isn’t a downfall though; it’s part of the experience. In Red Hook, you can take either a car barge or a walk on ferry.

The St. John ferry dock is conveniently located in Cruz Bay and is just walking distance to shopping, restaurants, and hiking trails. Both the car barge and the walk on ferry are a picturesque and an enjoyable ride. Take the walk-on ferry if you plan on exploring Cruz Bay and the near by trails and beaches, but for those of you looking to really explore the island, take the car barge and have the ability to drive the entire island in less than a day.

Regardless of what you plan on doing on St. John, the ride over will always be a great start to an awesome day. During this 10-15 minute ride, don’t be afraid to pull out your camera and take pictures and videos of the passing islands! It was also named one of the world’s best ferry ride in Travel and Leisure magazine. Read more here:

2016 St. Thomas Carnival

This year is no different than any other! Carnival is back and just as exciting as ever. Each year there’s a theme and this year it’s “Nothing Is More Fabulous Than Carnival in St. Thomas”.

There are a number of pageants. Prince and Princess selection show comes first! This is always a crowd favorite and is a very prestigious award to win as a pre-teen.

The Queen Selection Show follows soon after. The competitors are teenagers and the winner who is crowned is queen for the entire year until they pass the crown off to the next year’s queen. This is one of the most significant Carnival traditions.

In the next few weeks, there will be a lot of entertainment! And it only gets better when Carnival Village opens. Some say The Village is the life of the carnival. This is where you can enjoy live music, eat delicious food and desserts, ride traditional carnival rides and for the young kids, the children’s village.

The fun doesn’t stop there! Matter of fact, it heats up. The parades are always a crowd pleaser and many look forward to them all year. Planning begins right after that year’s carnival and is taken very seriously; for a good reason too! The routines, costumes, and music are all bits and pieces to be decided on. Every deciding factor is just as important as the next.

Handmade costumes take months to design and create, but they are a very important tradition to carnival. The more flamboyant, the better! You’ll see giant feathered headdresses, bejeweled tops and bottoms, and every bright color under the sun!

The three major parades are J’ouvert (April 28th), the Children’s Parade (April 29th), and Adult’s Parade (April 30th). These days are filled with joy and excitement that resonates throughout the whole island.

The last day of Carnival ends with a bang! Fireworks over Charlotte Amalie Harbor are a sight to see. It’s the most appropriate way to end such a fun month of celebration.

If you’re in St. Thomas in April, why not check out some of the Carnival festivities!
